Observance dates
The five limbs of the panchang
- Tithi
- The lunar day: each 12 degrees the Moon moves ahead of the Sun. Thirty tithis make a lunar month, fifteen in each paksha.
- Vara
- The weekday, counted from sunrise to the next sunrise.
- Nakshatra
- The lunar mansion the Moon is in: one of 27 equal parts of the zodiac, each divided into four padas.
- Yoga
- One of 27 divisions of the combined longitude of the Sun and the Moon.
- Karana
- Half of a tithi. There are 11 karanas, seven of which repeat through the month.
Questions
Why does the panchang change from city to city?
Each day is counted from local sunrise, and sunrise depends on where you are. A tithi or nakshatra can change at a different local time, and sometimes on a different civil day, in another city.
What are rahu kala, yamaganda and gulika kala?
They are traditional portions of the daytime, worked out from local sunrise and sunset and the weekday. Many people avoid starting new work in them. They are shown for reference.
How are these values calculated?
From astronomical positions of the Sun and Moon for the city's coordinates and time zone. The calculations are experimental and still being checked against published almanacs, so compare with your local almanac for important dates.
